Fancy’s Story

Fancy was never really built for the racecourse, at just 15 hands (152cm) no wonder her little legs struggled, she pulled up sore and retired after just four starts. Fortunately for Fancy, two of the ladies in her syndicate fell in love with this gorgeous chestnut mare (understandably), giving her a home after racing. Her owners have ensured Fancy has been cared for for the last few years running with her herd in Hutton Vale and giving birth to a foal a couple of years ago. Fancy gave back to her generous owners by spending quiet quality time with them and their children on their visits to Hutton Vale, showing her true love of humans.

As time passed and it was time for her to move on from their care, her owners knew she would be perfect for Equine Therapy but none of the Equine Therapy providers would take on an ex-racehorse, until they found Life with Horses.

We have found Fancy’s sweet personality and gentle temperament ideal and her beautiful soft brown eyes are adorable.

Though she is just 9 years old, her caring nature has cemented her as the mother of the group, looking after her fellow herd members and fussing over them and we are so happy that we were in a position to include her in our family. Fancy had a few health issues when she arrived as can often be the case, but with some treatment and care she is on the improve and her teeth are now back in tip-top condition, unfortunately, her feet need a little more time and TLC.

Giving Back

Fancy is already proving her worth and giving back to those in need, joining our horse family along with Brinky, Ducky and Scallywag and helping to heal. In her first two months, she has already started working with Equine Assisted Learning (EAL) clients and has even featured in a couple of team building days. Our clients fall in love with her as quickly as we did, her soft-natured disposition helping to promote self-awareness, empathy and emotional regulation as part of our EAL programme.

Fancy’s love of humans allows her to build relationships easily and connect with the people feeding and grooming her, responding to the body language and emotions of those around her. This level of sensitivity is specific to horses and the constant feedback helps clients be aware and to be present in the moment.

Thanks to you

We are only able to offer places to Fancy and other ex-racehorses like her due to the incredible generosity of our sponsors. As a not-for-profit, all money goes directly into caring for our amazing ex-racehorses and retraining them in preparation for their forever homes. We appreciate all of the support we receive and we (and Fancy) would like to thank Imagine Holidays, VB Home Loans, Hibbett’s Pest Control, Pro-Weld for sponsoring our gorgeous girl.
