Finding Nemo

Life with Horses is thrilled to announce the arrival of Nemo, the newest member of our equine family!

On September 18, 2023, Nemo was brought to Life with Horses by his previous owners, Compton Racing, who were looking for the best possible home for him. Knowing Nemo has the ideal personality for equine-assisted therapy and would be a perfect fit for Life with Horses. Thankfully, we were able to take him in with the help of the QOTT Therapy Horse Grant.

Getting to know each other

Of course, it wasn’t all smooth sailing as when Nemo first arrived, he was reluctant to let anyone near his head or ears, which was something we knew he would have to overcome to work to his full potential. However, after spending weeks with him in his paddock, gradually working his way up from scratching him all over, he finally felt safe enough to allow us to touch his head and ears. The progress was slow but throughout this process, Nemo proved to be a gentle and affectionate soul, an absolute pleasure to be around. He loves being given instructions and is always eager to understand his task and get it right, which is a great trait for horses working so closely with the public. He is a big sweetheart and certainly has a lot of love to give.

Melbourne Cup Campaign

Nemo is a bay gelding and stands over 16 hands tall, which makes him a true gentle giant. Despite being 8 years old, which translates to 30 human years, Nemo still has a lot to offer. While he was proving to be well-suited to working with people, he was suffering from a post-racing tendon injury that was holding him back from his duties and required rehabilitation. Fortunately, thanks to the generosity of our supporters who donated their time and money to the Life with Horses Melbourne Cup Campaign, Nemo has received the necessary rehabilitation over the past few months. And now, we’re thrilled to announce that he has been given the all-clear to start light work. The Life with Horses team is excited to see what Nemo can achieve once he is back under the saddle and ready to help others.
